TPMS Replacement
Since 2014, all new passenger vehicles sold in the EU must be equipped with a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). In January 2015, here in the UK, legislation came into force which stated vehicles fitted with an inoperative or faulty TPMS sensor would result in MOT failure.
The TPMS system is designed to alert you when one or more of your vehicles tyres becomes under-inflated. Some vehicles use the ABS system to calculate tyre pressures where as others use a sensor fitted to the wheel, which measures the tyre pressure and actual value and an alert gets displayed on the dashboard when pressures differ. The alert icon is easily identified; it looks like a horseshoe with an exclamation mark inside... But, if you look closely, you will see it's actually a flat tyre with an exclamation mark inside.
TPMS sensors are fitted with a non-replaceable battery, designed to last up to 7 years (depending on usage) and despite being positioned safely within the wheel, they are prone to being easily damaged by impacts such as, potholes or kerbs.
It's important not to rely solely on your TPMS alerting you to under-inflated tyres over carrying out you own regular visual checks. If you notice your tyres are looking low or are flat but your TPMS has not alerted you, it could mean that you have a faulty sensor. Similarly, if the light is on but your tyre pressures are correct and stable, this could also be the result of a faulty sensor.
What can Turnpike Garage do?
We are able to replace TPMS sensors and program them to the vehicles system.
We are also able to perform a Health Check to ensure the sensor and system are both providing the correct tyre pressure information and to check the battery condition.
